Pitch your idea

Producer Julian Klop

As a 10-year-old boy, I already recreated TV shows with my sister's dolls. When I was 17, I started as a reporter at the local broadcaster. During my journalism training, I did an internship at my own company where I did presentation jobs and made videos for clients such as RTL and DPG Media. In short: media has always been my great passion!

After a few years of making corporate videos with Klop Media, I chose a new direction in 2023: documentaries. I like to use my experience as a media maker and entrepreneur to help makers find their way in the film world. I teach at the Hogeschool Utrecht, coach makers in marketing their documentaries and work as a producer on the productions of Dochuis.

Giving new makers a platform And with that, helping new stories that we need to be heard into the world. That is what I stand for.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

1: Getting to know each other

Within 2 weeks after registration

If producer Julian Klop sees something in the social relevance and visual possibilities of your idea and your potential as a creator, you will be invited for an online conversation via Google Meet that you can schedule yourself in Calendly. Soon after our conversation you will hear whether we will enter into the collaboration. If that is not the case, you will receive useful tips on how to realize your plan via other parties.

2: Project plan & pitch

2 to 6 months

Together we will work on the preliminary research and development of the documentary plan for 2 months. You will work on the plan in Google Drive and every 2 weeks we will brainstorm about the progress via Google Meet in sessions of 1.5 hours. We will present the plan to broadcasters and financiers - possibly via routes such as 3LAB, Teledoc Campus, Filmfonds Shorts or DOCS - and then it is a 2 to 6 month, average 4 months, wait until the financing is in place.

3: Getting Started

Average 9 months

Once the plan has been approved by broadcasters and funds, our project will start. You will do research, shoot the recordings and edit the production, alone or with a team. We will take care of the production planning, budget control, project management, marketing and content guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does it cost money to use your help?

It costs you nothing. If the project gets off the ground, the producer receives a producer fee (percentage) on the budget or his hours that are included in the budget.

  • Do I have enough experience as a creator?

Have you just graduated or are you unsure whether your previous work is relevant to apply for the open call? Give it the benefit of the doubt! If it is too early for a collaboration, producer Julian Klop will be happy to give you tips on how to still develop your idea yourself with other parties.

  • Do I retain freedom over my idea?

It's your idea, we're here to help you realize it. We want you to further develop your directorial vision, creative skills and substantive talents. Trying things out or deviating from your idea is part of that. Everything is done in consultation, but you will always retain your freedom in your work.

  • What if I'm not a director myself?

Even if you don't want to direct, you are welcome! For example, are you a researcher/interviewer? Then we will find a team including a director that suits you.

  • What if I live abroad?

We work with directors who live at home and abroad, so you can apply if you live abroad.

  • Can I exclude broadcasters from collaboration?

Yes, you can exclude certain broadcasters at the NPO, commercial broadcasters or streaming services. The producer will not knock on their door with the project plan. Dochuis only excludes the broadcaster Ongehoord Nederland.

  • What if I have multiple ideas?

You can send multiple ideas. We can always - in the introductory meeting - see together which idea stands out for both of us.

  • What if I have no idea?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to participate in the open call without an idea. Your idea says something about your creative vision, your interests and your ambition. Do you have no idea yet but would you like to get in touch? Send producer Julian Klop an email with your CV.

  • Will I get paid during the process?

You will be paid market-conform for your work as director or maker of your production. If the plan is given the green light by broadcasters and/or funds, we will start the development and later the realization, where you will be paid market comfort for your services based on the number of days you work on the project, plus travel expenses.

  • Can I share my film plan in confidence?

We will not start working on the film plans that we receive without the maker. It is always possible that we are working on a certain theme, but we will always indicate this when you respond to the open call. Only the producer will see your film plan.

  • What themes are you looking for?

We are looking for social-societal stories. Issues that many people are victims of or have to deal with. A good story never stands alone, so show in your plan how many people (in the Netherlands) are struggling with the problem you want to address.

  • Do we enter into a contract?

We conclude a letter of intent stating that we intend to work together. That gives the producer the right to go to broadcasters and funds with the film plan. If the pitching and financing are successful, we conclude a contract of assignment with which we make the collaboration definitive. If the financing and pitching do not produce the desired results, we will look together at what to do next.
