'Doclokaal' offers an experimental classroom for young documentary makers (20-30 years) to produce journalistic documentaries and series for regional and local public broadcasters in different regions in the Netherlands. Under the guidance of an experienced project coach and a cameraman, they create in-depth cross-media documentaries for television and online, supported by longreads or series of articles. Our goal is threefold: strengthening local journalism, addressing social issues and offering a springboard for young talent to a successful career.
Have you made a film, for example for your graduation, and would you like to reach a large audience with your next film? Then we are looking for you!
Media professionals who have previously worked on documentaries, for example as a researcher or editor, but who have no experience as a director are also welcome to apply.
Media professionals who have been producing commercial work for years or artistic productions who want to make the step to substantive productions are also welcome.
We are looking for current and urgent social stories with a regional arena that take place in the Haaglanden region or the province of Utrecht and are close to the hearts of the residents.
Sharp, in-depth journalistic research is translated into cinematic 50-minute investigative journalism documentaries.
The documentaries show the diverse views on the social theme. By highlighting these perspectives, the viewer can form their own judgement and opinion.

Filmmakers apply with one to three film ideas for stories in the regions.
AUGUST 1 TO AUGUST 8, 2024
From the applications, a number of makers are invited for a job interview with the producers. They choose two participants.
8 AUGUSTUS T/M 8 SEPTEMBER 2024
The filmmakers will start with preliminary research and writing a synopsis and director's vision (the pitch plan). This will be presented to regional and local broadcasters.
SEPTEMBER 8 T/M JANUARY 1, 2025
After the final adjustments to the pitch plan, the producers will apply for project support from local and national (media) funds.
JANUARY 1 T/M OCTOBER 1,
The maker will start researching (3 months), shooting (3 months) and editing (3 months) his/her/their documentary, under the guidance of the producers and project coach.
OCTOBER & NOVEMBER 2025
The documentaries will be broadcast and published by the broadcaster and the project will conclude with festive premieres in The Hague and Utrecht.
21-year-old Jitse de Graaf is making a 4-part documentary series for RTV Utrecht about the threatening press safety of news photographers in the province of Utrecht. His challenge: finding photographers who dare to share their story and portraying the vulnerable experiences of the characters.
